Moms, are you looking for sacred Christmas music that is relaxing and peaceful to play in your home, then you’ll want to check out “A Sacred Christmas” by Garth Smith, a Christian pianist and composer. I was given a copy of this CD for the purpose of this review and I broke my rule of no Christmas music until after Thanksgiving to listen to it.
The CD features 11 songs and has many classic Christmas songs about Christ (including three that start with the word O):
- O Come, O Come Emmanuel
- O Little Town of Bethlehem
- O Holy Night
- Away in a Manger
- It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
- Still, Still, Still
LDS Christmas Music
Garth is an LDS musician and yet I wouldn’t really peg this as LDS Christmas music because there’s nothing specifically LDS about it. It will appeal to a general Christian audience.
In addition to original piano music the CD features women vocalists, strings and other instruments. However, I really loved the piano arrangements and would’ve loved it to be all piano with the exception of my two favorite songs: Sankta Lucia and Heaven’s Hallelujah. These are pure heaven and worth buying the album for! Sankta Lucia features the One Voice Children’s Choir, a choir that was formed to be part of the Salt Lake City Olympics. You’ll hit rewind just to keep basking in the angelic tones.
Who doesn’t love the song Hallelujah?
Titled Heaven’s Hallelujah, this version is passionate and worshipful. There’s hardly an arrangement of this song that I don’t love whether it’s sung by the original Leonard Cohen who wrote it or any of the covers (including by Jeff Buckley, Willie Nelson, Bon Jovi or my favorite version by Cloverton). Hallelujah was even featured in the film “Shrek”. There’s even a book about it: The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of “Hallelujah” This song has been covered by hundreds of musicians, but some make it sound more like a ballad. Not many hit the spiritual depth this version does. It’s captures the meaning of being broken and the redemption offered by Jesus.
There’s always room for another version and you’ll love this one with Lauren Sullivan’s gorgeous voice. I could do without the echo part but otherwise it’s the Christmas song I have on constant repeat. When I hear it, I feel love for Christ, the scriptures and His miraculous birth.
Listen on YouTube:
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor (you know)
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show that to me, do you?
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Maybe there’s a God above
All I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
