The 10 Most Romantic Movies – From a Man’s Perspective
This post was most recently updated on February 4th, 2017
Since Valentine’s Day is coming up in a few weeks, we decided to do two posts about romantic movies.
We asked a man and a woman to share their most romantic movies. This one was written by a man, and this one from a woman’s perspective. Call it a romantic movie face off! We want to know – which one do you like best?
We asked Kelly (a married man) to start off with his list of romantic movies, including romantic comedies and other good romantic movies to watch. Many of these movies are available to rent online for $3.99 for 24 hours through Amazon – if they are I’ve linked to them below.
Do you agree with this list? Let us know your favorites in the comments! I read and respond to all comments.
Valentine’s Day has always been about the ladies. But just because this is their holiday, it doesn’t mean you can’t hunker down with some good chick flicks that are tailored for the men! Here is a list of 10 great romantic movies for this Valentine’s Day. Some of these will be sure pleasers whether or not you are sitting next to a special someone.
Best Romantic Comedies
The Princess Bride (1987)
Ratings: 8.1/10 from 278,788 users from IMDB
Stars: Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright
The Princess Bride is a story being read to a sick boy by his grandfather. Buttercup (Wright) is kidnaped, and her farm boy (Elwes) has to come to the rescue. This movie has most everything a guy could want in a good chick flick, chases, sword play, being “mostly dead,” pirates, a gas swamp, revenge, a giant, a man with six fingers on one hand, oh, and true love. This is a classic that many men (and women) want to watch and quote from, again and again.
Groundhog Day (1993)
Ratings: 8.1/10 from 410,631 users from IMDB
Stars: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott
This movie is one of the best romantic movies and is one of my all-time favorite movies. It’s is about a reporter (Murray) who gets caught in a time loop (you guessed it, on Groundhog’s Day). He can’t get out of this loop until he finds a way for the love interest (MacDowell) to fall for him. But until he figures out what he wants to do with his life he spends a lot of days trying to figure out how to end the loop by killing himself in some very creative ways. Once he realizes he can’t die, he turns his attention to something more responsible, like getting the girl. To do this he has to learn to be a better person than he was at the beginning of the movie.
Romantic Movies – Drama
Somewhere In Time (1980)
Ratings: 7.3/10 from 20,273 users from IMDB
Stars: Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, Christopher Plummer
Obsessed with a portrait of an actress from the turn of the last century, a playwright uses self-hypnosis to travel back in time to find the object of his desire. Be warned, this romance is of the cerebral sort, not the physical sort. The love between the writer and the actress is a classical romantic love that is never actually meant to be satisfied. This is best watched with a significant other, whether you want to mock the stoic action or revel in the sentimentality together. If it is the latter, have some tissues on hand.
A Walk in the Clouds (1995)
Ratings: 6.6/10 from 23,791 users from IMDB
Stars: Keanu Reeves, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Anthony Quinn
This is the kind of romance even a guy can be grateful to get sucked into. Victoria (Sánchez-Gijón) is single and pregnant, and dreading the coming confrontation with her old-school traditional family when she has to reveal her condition. On the bus ride home she is accosted by some ruffians, but is defended by Paul (Reeves). Paul gets thrown off the bus and has to walk. Paul discovers Victoria sitting on the roadside, dreading having to face her family. He helps her with a plan to pretend he is her newly-wed husband. He’ll stay the night then run off in the morning, supposedly abandoning her. This will save her reputation with her family. Of course there are complications. The two fall in love with each other, and everything that can go wrong does go wrong. And did I mention that Paul is already married?
A Walk in the Clouds is a classic love story told in a romanticized style. This one will leave you longing for that kind of connection with another person.

Ratings: 6.2/10 from 28,776 users from IMDB
Stars: Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond, Greg Kinnear
Sabrina (Ormond) is raised on the estate of the Larrabee family. Her father is their chauffeur. She watches their lavish lifestyle from a tree in the garden and falls for David (Kinnear), the younger of the two Larrabee brothers.
Eventually she goes off to Paris. When she returns she is so different the brothers don’t even recognize her. David, who is now engaged, falls for Sabrina, requiring Linus (Ford) to resort to drastic measures to try to save the upcoming marriage. He pretends to fall for Sabrina himself to get her away from his younger brother, and of course, does fall in love with her.
This is a romantic comedy that is done in classic fashion. All the original intentions seem to fade into the past, and we are all left feeling like life is as it ought to be.

The Lake House (2006)
Ratings: 6.8/10 from 110,658 users from IMDB
Stars: Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Christopher Plummer
Describing the plot for this movie would take an astrophysicist, which I am not. It involves time travel, temporal displacement, and a dog that belongs to two different people living in two different times at the same time. But that is not the point of the movie.
The story revolves around an architect (Reeves) who moves into a lake house that used to be owned by a doctor (Bullock). She leaves the new owner of the home a note, but there is a question as to when she wrote the note. He writes her back and the mailbox that delivers their notes becomes the go between for the two people living years apart from each other. Through their letters they fall in love. Then the difficulty is trying to figure out how they can meet even though they are living in two different years.
This movie has just enough of the cerebral in it to keep the guys happy, and just enough of the romantic impulses to make it a chick flick.
The Lake House is only available for purchase (digital copy). Click here to go check it out.
Ratings: 7.7/10 from 204,931 users from IMDB
Stars: Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller
This is not a simple plot, but then it is a fantasy, and you can get as complicated as you want in a fantasy. The short version of the story is that Tristin (Cox) wants to win over Victoria (Miller) and promises her he will fetch a falling star for her. He goes over the wall that separates this world from the fantasy world to find the star that just fell. Well, will you look at that, the star is really a woman, who happens to possess all kinds of powers, like immortality. There are people in the fantasy world who would love to eat her heart to take her immortality away and use it for themselves. See where this is going?
This movie has action galore! There is a swashbuckling transvestite pirate played by De Niro, who travels around in a flying pirate ship, there are ghosts of brothers who haunt together, and much more. If you haven’t seen this movie, it is worth at least one serious watch. Oh, and there is a love story woven into all that action.

The Lucky One (2012)
Ratings: 6.5/10 from 71,178 users from IMDB
Stars: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner
Logan (Zac Efron) is a Marine on a tour of duty. In some rubble he spots an old photo of a girl. As he picks it up an explosion goes off where he had just been standing. The photo saved his life. When he returns to the States he determines to hunt for that girl, and as luck would have it, he finds her. (This is a romance after all.) The rest of the story involves him being the gallant that wins her heart. This is a great feel-good movie.
If you like The Notebook, The Lucky one is by the same author and gets very high reviews too!
The Notebook (2004)
Ratings: 7.9/10 from 376,868 users from IMDB
Stars: Gena Rowlands, James Garner, Rachel McAdams
This movie deals with the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease. The movie moves back and forth between the elderly couple and their young romance when they first met. Allie (Rolands) has Alzheimer’s, and her husband, Noah (Garner) reads to her each day from a notebook that contains the stories of their young love. The hope is that, at some point in the telling of their story, she will remember who he is, even if for only a moment.
The Notebook one of the romantic movies to watch that everyone loves. It is a tender and passionate love story that is unabashedly romantic. You can’t help but fall in love with both versions of the couple, the young and the old. Their fierce devotion and tenderness towards their respective partner captures your heart. If you can make it through this movie without tissues you may need to check yourself for a pulse.
Ratings: 6.7/10 from 236,165 users from IMDB
Stars: Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James
Ignore the ratings on this movie from IMDB. This is a guy’s movie, and I’m sure the 6.7 average is heavily affected by votes from the ladies. The Date Doctor (Smith) is here to save your bacon. When you can’t get a date or hold onto a girl, you call the Date Doctor. He tells you what to say and what to do to prevent you from being yourself long enough to get the girl to like you.
The problem in this movie is that the Date Doctor is also in love, but can’t make any headway. His efforts to captivate Sara (Mendes) seem to backfire at every turn. Perhaps he is just trying too hard. This is a story of two men, Albert (James) and Hitch (Smith) both trying to get their girl. Hitch is working wonders with Albert, but what is wrong with his own game? Perhaps sometimes just being yourself is the best thing you can be.
From romantic movies to the best romantic comedies, we hope you enjoyed this list! Our next post has the best romantic movies post from a woman’s perspective.
