Purple Mattress Review – After Over 5 Years Sleeping on Purple

This is the original “The Purple Mattress” review. Updated for 2022. The new version has a different cover and is 9.25″ thick. It’s medium as far as firmness. Or there’s now the Purple Plus mattress which is 11″ deep and has 2″ of foam right under the comfort grid layer on top, making it the softest Purple mattress.

We’ve had a Purple mattress since the company started (the original). Now we have a Purple 4 which has a thicker, nicer cover, pocketed coils, better edge support and that comes in 3 different thicknesses. Read about the Purple hybrid mattress and what we think of it here.

WARNING: the original Purple mattress has changed, it’s not the same as it was when we got ours. The material is much cheaper and thinner. You can feel the grid under you. So if you get one, I HIGHLY suggest getting a 2 inch or more mattress topper (I bought and really like this mattress topper because the cotton part keeps the memory foam from getting hot, plus it adds softness if you like a softer bed).

Or go for one of the newer Purple models which as MUCH higher quality.

Purple mattress launched on Kickstarter. When it came out, we were the only people I knew with a Purple bed and we got a lot of questions. So we wanted to let others know what we thought. The first time I wrote the review we’d only had the mattress for a few months. It’s been over two years now since we started sleeping on Purple so I feel qualified to give a thorough review.

Purple Mattress Review

Purple is one of the original online mattress brands which means they are not sold in stores. You buy the mattress online and it’s shipped to your home. What makes Purple unique is the top two inches. Almost every mattress sold online is made of foam or mostly foam.

Instead of being a solid material, Purple is made of what they call hyper-elastic polymer. It’s the purple stretchy stuff that’s right on the top. Unlike memory foam mattresses Purple is temperature neutral in that it doesn’t sleep hot (like memory foam is famous for) or develop the severe body imprints that are common with most foam beds. A leading Consumer reporting magazine has rated it highly and it’s been named as a bed that sleeps cooler. So if you don’t like the warmth of memory foam, keep reading.

Purple is the color of royalty and they say you’ll sleep like a king or queen on one. Here’s how we slept on Purple…

Purple Mattress Review

No Pressure Mattress

Purple says they are a “no pressure mattress”. They mean Purple will hold your body and not put pressure on your “pressure points” causing you to toss and turn. It’s also no pressure to buy one because you can return it if you’re not totally happy with your new mattress. You can literally put eggs on your mattress, press or lie down on it and the eggs will be absorbed into the mattress (rather than break).

Purple is the creator of the famous raw egg test video that shows the egg test. The video is informative and entertaining. If you’re local you might recognize Goldilocks is Mallory Everton from Studio C. What you may not know is they didn’t just have her promote Purple mattress. She was required to sleep on a Purple bed to make sure she knew and loved the mattress before she made the video.

Purple Mattress Firmness

Purple is about a 6.5 on the firmness scale, so even with the stretchy layer it is more firm than you might expect. However, it supports your back and evenly distributes your body weight.

The Purple mattress was firmer than I expected but not too firm. It’s just a little firmer than medium. Firmness is so subjective that it’s really tough to say what you’ll think until you sleep on one but I’d say it’s a feel most people will like and adjust to if needed.

I’m a side sleeper and my husband is a back sleeper. We’re both on the taller end – I’m 5′ 8″ and he’s 6′ 4″ tall. I noticed we both do not toss and turn nearly as much since sleeping on Purple to try and get comfortable. That means a deeper sleep.

Adjustment Period

Before we got a Purple mattress we were sleeping on a $3,000 name brand mattress. It was about 8 years old and needed to be replaced. There were already deep body imprints which created peaks and valleys where we slept.

When we first got our Purple mattress there was an initial adjustment period for me of just over a week (but not for my husband Stephen). It wasn’t familiar and is a bit more firm than I anticipated. We kept the other mattress in the hall just in case. Then something changed.

We went on vacation and I slept on an awful hotel room mattress. It sloped so bad that I ended up squished on the edge of the bed feeling like I might slide onto the floor at any moment. It was so bad that I couldn’t wait to go home and sleep on our mattress.

After that experience, everything clicked and I have loved my Purple mattress. I miss it when we travel. I sleep best on it. I’ve since talked to the company who say that it’s normal to have an adjustment period on any new mattress but especially on Purple. It’s just so unique with the honeycomb top. Try to give yourself at least 14 days to adjust.

Not sure if it’s right for you?

The Purple Mattress

Purple Bed Price

Since the price chances so often, check the website for current pricing (this link goes to the current Purple coupons and deals page).

Purple also offers financing through Affirm – so you can get the bed now and pay as you go. The first 6 months are interest free with approved credit. We also recommend getting a Purple mattress protector and putting it on before you sleep on Purple the first time to prolong the life of your mattress even more.

Purple Mattress Sizes

Purple beds come in twin, twin XL (2 inches longer than a standard twin), full, queen, king and California king.

The Purple twin mattress has an extra 2 inches in length compared to a regular twin. Our daughter has a twin and it fits the frame just fine.

Should you Buy a Purple Mattress on Amazon?

You can buy Purple on Amazon but I don’t recommend it. Here’s why: you don’t get the long warranty of 101 days if you order through Amazon. Instead you will have 30 days.

That’s still enough time for most people to see if they like it (you can’t lie on a mattress from a mattress store for 30 days and then return it). Here’s the kicker though – you’ll have to pay the return shipping. If you order from Purple it does not cost you.

So I recommend that you get the 100 nights and free returns by buying directly through Purple’s website, not through Amazon. Just use Amazon to read onPurple Amazon reviews from other people who have purchased one. There are almost 750 reviews for Purple mattress on Amazon right now.

Where to Buy a Purple Mattress

Here’s where to buy a Purple mattress. They also have them in stores but their mattresses are so unique that you should expect to sleep on it for at least a few weeks to adjust before you decide (unless you’re in pain). You can’t tell by lying on it for 10 minutes in a store.

Purple Mattress Return Policy and Warranty

Purple mattress has a 100 night warranty initially and a 10 year full replacement warranty.

Purple has removed much of the risk of buying a new mattress. If you go into a showroom and lie down on a mattress to test it, you can’t really know what it is like. You really need to sleep on it for a while in your home.

With Purple I recommend you give it 2 weeks before you decide if it’s for you. If you don’t like it after sleeping on it for 100 nights, you can return it for a full refund, no questions asked. That’s better than trying something out in the showroom and knowing once you buy the mattress, you’re stuck with it. Lying down for 15 minutes is not the same as sleeping on a mattress for 8 hours! I don’t know about you but I felt like I was stuck with whatever I decided to buy because there was no returning it!

If by chance you want to return your mattress, they will pick it up at your house or help you find a charity to donate it to. You don’t have to put in the packaging or worry about paying for shipping. They’ll take it away and you won’t have to worry about it. To me that is no risk! Purple mattresses are donated to local charities like homeless shelters or a third party mattress return company.

Purple comes with a 10 year warranty. The 10 years and they will cover any indentations that are 1 inch or deeper. This is one of the best warranties you’ll find anywhere. The thing is most warranties are full of loopholes so big that it’s almost impossible to use them if you need to. This is a 10 year full replacement warranty.

If you’re interested after you read my Purple mattress review, I encourage you to test it out. You won’t regret it.

Purple Mattress Firmness

Purple was more firm than we expected because the top layer isn’t a solid surface and feels flexible and soft. However, Purple is medium firm. Some say it’s too firm, others say it’s too soft. Still more say it’s just right. It’s so personal to you – that’s why they have the 100 day trial period so you can see for yourself by sleeping on Purple.

Just know that since there’s regular foam but no memory foam (the kind of foam that leaves an imprint longer when you press your hand into it), it doesn’t have the same feel. Instead of sinking in as much, it feels more like floating on top. The top layer is ALWAYS a comfort grid layer. It’s made of a polymer and moves some (not like a water bed though) and is stretchy.  The Purple Mattress and the Purple Plus has 2″ of comfort grid on top.

Purple Mattresses Are Recyclable

I got to tour the factory to see how Purple is made. They have a machine that rolls a mattress into a carrying case. Yes, that was impressive. But even more impressive to me is the recycling aspect. The purple part of each mattress can be torn down and recycled! It’s just remelted and can be used again. They were melting the purple pellets and it didn’t even smell. Try that with plastic – the fumes would be horrible. It’s pretty amazing that I couldn’t smell anything. I really love that a Purple mattress can be recycled into more Purple products (like seat cushions).

Note: Purple mattresses do not contain latex.

Purple mattress Review after 2 years

Best Mattress 2022

Best Mattress to absorb movement (so you don’t get wakened every time the bed moves).

Before we got Purple, our mattress had a large peak in the middle and two valleys where we slept. In the industry these are called body impressions. To snuggle we had to do what I called crossing the wake to get to the other side.

My husband, Stephen, is a big guy. Every time he moved on our last mattress, it was like a tidal wave in our bed. In mattress terms this is movement transfer. His movement woke me up so many nights and caused me to lose a lot of sleep. I’m not a picnic in the morning anyway but it’s worse when I’m exhausted. His moving around kept me awake more than new babies ever did (at least they grew out of waking up every few hours).

The #1 selling point of Purple to me is that the purple part is like a shock absorber so I don’t wake up when my husband moves around or gets up at night. Purple has saved me so much sleep and for that reason I don’t want another mattress that’s not Purple.

Here’s what he said:

“After four nights our Purple mattress is awesome! I can get out of bed and Janet cannot even tell.”

You could describe me as the type of sleeper who doesn’t move. If it weren’t for Stephen all I do is turn down a corner, get into bed, and when I wake up, just put the corner back and the bed is made. You could put a glass of water next to me and it probably wouldn’t spill. Not so with Stephen. I really should give him a bed tax and make him make the bed at least twice as often as I do since he messes up the sheets more!

Verdict: best medium firm mattress for couples

Watch our Purple mattress video.

With Purple, Stephen can get up, shift around and not wake me up. I like other mattresses but not if we’re sleeping in the same bed. I don’t even like the idea of sharing a mattress at a hotel now. It’s not a vacation when you’re sleep deprived the whole time. Since having Purple I notice more a lot of hotel mattresses have sags. Plus, once again, Stephen wakes me up when he gets up or moves around.

My Only Complaint: I Wish the Bed Was Thicker

If it were a perfect world I’d like our Purple mattress to be 1 inch thicker because we’re used to that loft but our sheets fit fine and it’s not a big deal. It’s 9.25 inches. We got used to it but today we’d get the Purple Plus (actually, a hybrid, but assuming you don’t want to spend that much or don’t want a hybrid/spring mattress).

Purple Mattress Unboxing

Ok, now what about the mattress itself – if you buy one, what does it look like? It comes in a giant roll, put into a plastic bag that has handles on it. When we first got a Purple mattress we created a fun video of us unboxing it to show you what it’s like when it arrives at your door.

The first thing we noticed when we unboxed our new mattress, is that Purple is HEAVY. Much heavier than it looks. I could barely lift it by myself even though it comes in a roll and has handles to help you lift it. Actually, heavy is good because it means it’s a quality mattress, but it’s bad if you want to try to move it. Even if you’re in good shape there is no doubt that it’s going to take two people and some muscle to put it on your box springs.

Consumer Reports Review of Purple Mattress

Price Not an Indicator of Quality

Don’t overpay for your mattress. Consumer Reports didn’t yet have a Purple mattress review when I looked or it was for paid members only. Overall, this is what they said about mattress purchases: price doesn’t equal quality. “We’ve tested mattresses that cost as little as $250 for a queen-sized mattress and others that cost nearly $8,000. Neither of them did particularly well in our tests,” said Celia Kuperszmid Lehrman, Consumer Reports home editor.

The point is you don’t need to overpay for a mattress to be high quality. “We’ve found that price isn’t a particularly good indicator of how supportive or durable a mattress will be. In fact, our tests have turned up plenty of fine mattresses that cost $1,000, or less,” Kuperszmid Lehrman said.

Many bed in a box mattress like Purple are in this price range offering consumers a fair price and excellent terms to order a mattress online.

Purple Mattress Protector

I HIGHLY recommend that you buy a mattress protector immediately and never sleep on a bed without one. They protect your investment, like insurance, and extend the life of your mattress. We have a Purple mattress protector and it’s great. It stretches and allows for the gel to move so it can cushion your pressure points (hips, shoulders, knees). It’s easy to wash and put on because it’s elastic all around. It makes no noise at all. We can’t even tell it’s there. We don’t particularly love the Purple pillows or sheets but we do love the mattress protector. It’s stretchy and stays on with elastic around all the edge.

Sleep Quality After Almost a Year

I wish that I’d had the Misfit fitness tracker before we got our Purple mattress so I could compare my sleep before and after. We’re always on a quest for the best night of sleep. Even with a long night you’re not always getting as much deep sleep as you need and you can wake up feeling exhausted even after 7 or 8 hours. Most of my sleep is spent in the deeper section – honestly it seems harder to get as much deep sleep as I get older. If you look below you’ll see that over 5 hours of my sleep on Purple was deeper more restful sleep.

Here’s a recent readout from the sleep tracker:

Misfit sleep tracker

Purple mattress review overall rating: we give Purple a 4.7 out of 5

I highly recommend Purple mattress if you have back pain, sleep with someone who moves around a lot and wakes you up, or if you just want a great mattress for a reasonable price!

That wraps up my Purple mattress review! Please let me know if you have any questions about this bed in the comments and I’ll answer them.

  • Hi Joe,
We’re still HUGE fans of Purple. I’m DYING to get my Purple pillows when they come out in December or January! I hate mattresses that are uneven and pillows that are flat.

Purple is one of my all time favorite products for the comfort and price. Plus as a marketer I love their fun approach. They make mattresses entertaining.

It’s really all we’ll buy. I think we’re coming up on a year now….I fully expect it to go 10 years without any body imprints as they call them (I call them peaks and valleys).

    Thanks for your comment,

  • Jennica
Are you just dying for a pillow next? My pillows go flat within a few months. I’m hoping Purple pillows will be as amazing as a Purple mattress!

    Have fun

  • I’ve been wondering about this mattress brand. I love their commercials. Now I just have to convince hubby we need a new mattress.

  • Good luck Jane, you don’t know what you’re missing until you sleep on a better mattress. Even my friend’s son was happy with his old mattress that was $50 until he slept on a Nectar we reviewed. Then we had him sleep on a value brand that was better than the first one but not as good as the Nectar. Guess what? He misses the Nectar and the great sleep he got. He’s 8 years old! here’s the post about Nectar: http://www.twomomsreview.com/nectar-mattress-review – another great mattress.

  • Hi Janet,
May I ask how much you and your husband weigh? My husband is also 6ft 4, but he weighs 312lbs. I’ve seen recent reviews stating the original purple isn’t good for “heavier” people. I’m not sure I want the newest model with coils. Thanks for your input!

  • Hi Elisabeth, I hate to admit this but I’m around 165 and 5′ 8″ and he’s about 240 and 6′ 5″. From talking about Purple for so long I’ve heard all sorts of different opinions on this. Some are happy some aren’t, I’ve had people who weighed less say they didn’t like it and those who’ve weighed more say they did. Is your husband a side sleeper? If so that might be my biggest hesitation on recommending the original. Hi shoulders won’t get the benefit of the gel layer. He’ll hit the foam layer (which isn’t a bad thing but it means the gel layer isn’t cushioning as much). A mattress is so individual, it’s a tough call.

I’d go with Purple3 or Purple4 but you can try the original and return it if it’s not a fit.

  • We have had our purple mattress for 8 months now and there is a definite ridge in the middle of it. I would like to know if there’s a way to get rid of that.

  • That sounds like a manufacturing defect – you should ask Purple about it because that doesn’t sound normal!

  • There is a problem here, This statement in itself is contradictory and in your video you state that “it doesn’t come with a box spring, so you will need to use your own box spring,” yet using a box spring actually voids the warranty! Can you clarify this, please!!

Purple only sells the top mattress. You need to buy box springs or bed base or platform to put it on. Purple doesn’t recommend box springs because the mattress is so heavy and is better supported with a mattress base. In fact, if you use box springs it will void the warranty. Purple sells a power base (including a split king) or a basic platform for your mattress.

  • Hi Diana, you’re right. That is confusing. Basically Purple says not to use box springs and I shouldn’t have said that you should. We did but we took our chances (and it’s been years later and we’re still using box springs). Our bed is older and it doesn’t have slats 2 inches apart or closer to support the bed. We also like the extra height. So instead of buying a new bed frame we use box springs. I guess we could get a board but then we’d lose the height we like.

Actually my cynical side says Purple just wants you to buy their base because they don’t sell a foundation.

I wish that I could edit that part!

    To your best sleep,
