Purple Adjustable Bed Review & Video Walkthrough
This post was most recently updated on March 30th, 2018
The Purple adjustable bed (or Purple Powerbase) is a high end adjustable bed that I’ve wanted to review for a long time. I finally got one and now I can do a thorough review, plus I now have a video showing all of the features so you can see the bed in action.
Purple Adjustable Bed Review
The Purple Powerbase is an adjustable or what some people call an electric bed. On a basic level an adjustable bed lets you raise the height of your head and/or feet, along with other features.
Purple provided a powerbase for review at my request. We got a queen size powerbase and tested it with a queen size Purple brand mattress (ours, not provided).
Adjustable Beds — a Lifestyle Product
In the past, adjustable beds were synonymous with hospital beds or people who were older or sick. The mattresses were covered in plastic and the bed did basic movements only. Let’s just say it brings up an image that’s not too inviting or relaxing.
However, today’s adjustable beds are made to do a lot more and look beautiful in your room. They’re not just for someone who is sick, immobile or who’s back hurts so bad they have to spend part or all of their day in bed. These beds look better, have more features and cater to a younger demographic.
The Purple mattress is good at conforming to the unique contours of your body, no matter which position you like to sleep in. The adjustable Purple PowerBase quietly adjusts positions with a push of a button.
If you sleep in a recliner. Or prop yourself up against a stack of pillows, you may really want an adjustable bed. Even if you have no health issues but just want to wake up your best or add comfort, this bed will be amazing.
Like my mom said after trying it out: I didn’t think I wanted one or cared about an adjustable bed but after trying one I could see why you’d want one, they are so nice!
Purple Powerbase Features
Here’s are the features of the Powerbase:
- Push a button and your Purple PowerBase can elevate your head or feet.
- Wireless remote control with the following features:
- Zero Gravity. Used by astronauts and puts your body in a its most natural position, so you get better blood flow and less stress on your organs and muscles. NASA found that zero gravity improves blood flow and provides the best conditions for breathing. Your heart isn’t working as hard, and your lungs are able to deliver more oxygen to your organs and brain.
- Preset your favorite positions
- Massage with 5 settings.
- The PowerBase can support up to 850 pounds, including the weight of the mattress.
- Anti snore button, even a small incline helps stop snoring for most people.
- Under-bed Lighting. So if you need to get up in the middle of the night you can see where you’re walking – and avoid tripping over your kid’s stuff they left in your room.
- USB ports and outlets – these are to plug electronics in so you can charge your phone or iPad without a long stretch.
- Attachments for 3 height options.
- App so you can use your phone to adjust your bed or even tap the snore button as needed (to raise the other side of the bed slightly without waking them up to do it. Drawback: only available for Apple products.
Warranty and Returns
The powerbase comes with a 20-Year Limited Warranty
Unlike the mattress there is no trial period or returns accepted on the powerbase. It comes flat in a box and it’s heavy so moving it or sending it won’t work. However, know that the Purple Powerbase is made by Reverie especially for Purple and Reverie has been making adjustable beds for decades. They are one of the top adjustable bed manufacturers in the world.
The PowerBase comes in a twin xl, queen, or split king. The split king PowerBase can be linked so that both sides move together or apart. It has two motors so it’s priced a little higher.
Split king $2,798 (which can be paired to operate as one and with one king size mattress)
Purple has financing options for the PowerBase. Starts at $85/month for a twin XL this is an option if you don’t want to pay the whole amount up front. I’ve never seen it discounted but if you check the website they sometimes offer cash off on your mattress when you buy a powerbase.
Split King Pros and Cons
You can use 2 twin XL mattresses which is equivalent to a split CA king because they’re extra long. Or, you can use one king size mattress and sync them to they move together.
I prefer a king mattress that stretches across both beds to 2 twins. We slept on an adjustable with 2 twins and I didn’t like it because I don’t like the crack in the middle. I feel like I’ll fall into it, even though I won’t. I’m willing to give up the benefits of not waking each other up and not having completely separate control to have the feeling like we’re together. We don’t snuggle in bed when we sleep but this pretty much makes snuggling a challenge. One person has to come over to the other side – there’s no meeting in the middle. Our marriage is pretty equal and so we’ve got to have middle ground to meet on!
Purple Powerbase Headboard
The powerbase doesn’t come with a headboard or frame. You can use it as is (by itself) but I would at least attach a headboard to the wall to give it a more finished look. You can use any bed frame and just drop it inside. If it comes with a bar across the center or slats, just remove that. It should fit in any size frame that matches the size of your powerbase. Zinus makes some nice bedframes for a reasonable cost.
Medical conditions that can be helped by not sleeping flat
Purple says acid reflux is ruining your sleep and your life.
People who suffer from acid reflux report a lower health-related quality of life:
- 80% report a reduced enjoyment of food.
- 60% report sleep problems.
- 40% say they experience difficulty concentrating on work when symptoms were present.
Laying flat can allow your stomach acids to travel up your esophagus. But by simply inclining your upper body 6-8 inches, you can help ease acid reflux, indigestion and heartburn.
An estimated 80% of Americans are affected by back pain at some point in their life. Back pain can often lead to poor sleep and it’s why people sleep in recliners. The best angle to alleviate pressure on your back is a 45 degree incline, so you can preset to that. Some people put pillows between their legs but you can raise your feet and bend your knees to help take pressure off your back and hips.
Some people report that their bad back feels worse in the morning after lying flat all night. As you’ll see from the video above (which I helped with – that’s my brother in the video), the combination of a Purple mattress and powerbase can really help alleviate your back pain.
Swollen Feet, Legs and Knees
Sleeping with your legs elevated helps reduce swelling in your legs, which also helps reduce pain.
Open the airways.
People who wake up with stiffness and soreness. This will help reduce joint compression which improves circulation and decreases soreness and pain.
I’m going to add a list of bases that go with your Purple adjustable bed since that’s been a question I’ve had for a long time. I’m headed to the Las Vegas furniture show so I can learn all about them. If you have any questions after reading my Purple adjustable bed review please comment below and I’ll answer them.
