lume deodorantWhat makes Lume different? It’s an all-natural, aluminum-free deodorant and whole body odor slayer for underarms and anywhere you need it. Launched in October 2017, it’s become one of the most popular natural deodorants, not only in the market, but worldwide.

Inventor Shannon Klingman saw a pattern of women with odor problems when she was an OBGYN. After researching the causes, she created Lume, specifically to address embarrassing feminine odors her patients were struggling with. Odor issues are common but often misdiagnosed as yeast infections when it’s often an external issue, caused by bacteria.

Instead of blaming women’s anatomy for smells, she learned it’s bacteria on the outside that’s to blame. Women fight this with douching, wipes, sprays and other scented products to mask odors but it doesn’t prevent it. It simply masks it and mixes with it.

Here’s her inspiring story in her own words:

There is a small learning curve – including to only apply a small amount of Lume and let Lume dry before getting dressed.

I Went Natural and I Don’t Stink

Normally I use clinical strength deodorant but over the years I’ve been going more and more natural. Strange enough it started with steam cleaning. I realized that I could clean with water and kill off bacteria and viruses without using any chemicals.

There’s one caveat though – I’ll choose natural products, including deodorant, but it has to work! I don’t want to stink! And in the past that’s exactly what happened. So I was very skeptical that it’s possible to find an all natural deodorant that works.

First, I tried and liked Native natural deodorant but there’s one drawback. It has coconut oil, shea butter, and oils (for scent). Since I’m not allergic to baking soda, the fact that it has it doesn’t bother me but a lot of people get rashes.

I’ve been using Lume for about 8 months now. There was a little bit of a learning curve, however, it was well worth it!. Here is some information from my own experience and research to help you decide if Lume is right for you.

Lume Natural Deodorant

Though it was originally made specifically for women, men love Lume too. For example, the renowned, ‘Odor Guru’ Barrie Drewitt of Princeton Consumer Research, has tested deodorants (and sniffing pits) for over 20 years. He was driven to find the best deodorant because he was self-conscious about his own underarm odor!

Watch him share his story about testing the best natural deodorants on the market: Schmidt’s, Native and Lume.

Lume is different than what you’re used to, this video shows you how to apply Lume for best results.

Lavender Sage Deodorant is derived from pure essential oils. Silver Spruce, Jasmine Rose Juniper Berry scents are extracted from natural, skin-safe botanicals.

Scents are sourced through Berje Inc., a leading supplier of aromatic chemicals and essential oils for fragrance and flavor industries. Note that Lume does not contain any tree nuts, sesame or peanuts. However, the mandelic acid in Lume is derived from almonds.

Here are the scents:
Unscented

Sage has a minty yet grounded odor and has natural anti-microbial properties. Belonging to the family of mint plants, it has a methanol scent and a cooling feel to it. It’s also known to alleviate depression, anxiety, and depression.

Juniper Berry
Juniper Berry is a fruity yet grassy scent that combines the detoxifying power of the juniper berry with bergamot. Juniper Berries are small blue colored berries popular for their antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties.
The combinations of these unique smells make up the distinctive, resinous, bright and flowery smell of Juniper Berries.

There is no Aluminum, Baking Soda, Silicone, Sulfates, Gluten, Parabens, Talc, Corn or Phthalates in Lume.

Now, why are these particular substances harmful?

Let’s talk about a few of these ingredients and why you probably don’t want them in your deodorant.

Aluminum:
Aluminum-containing deodorants prevent different toxins from expelling from the body. These toxins end up clogging your lymph nodes which are present around your armpits and breasts. It’s been linked to breast cancer. Furthermore, your skin also absorbs aluminum. This can affect the blood-brain barrier. And studies also link aluminum with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Baking Soda:
Baking Soda can chemical burns to skin, particularly in your underarms. Some people develop rashes from it.

Phthalates:
Phthalates belong in a family of industrial chemicals particularly used as solvents in the cosmetics industry and other similar industries and to soften PVC plastic. They can be detrimental to health as they can damage kidneys, livers, reproductive systems, and lungs. Long-term exposure to the chemical can alter the reproductive system manifestly.

Safe for Everyone!
If you are pregnant, people advise that you stay away from chemicals and different irritants that can harm you or your baby. Likewise, if you are a patient of breast cancer, PCOS or any other disease, it is preferable that you stay away from certain chemicals.
Lume does not have ethyl alcohol and is irritant-free. This also makes it a multi-purpose deodorant that you can apply to every part of your body that has bacteria; private areas (my husband calls it the butt deodorant), hands, feet, belly button, under folds of skin and even behind the ears!

It’s even safe for teens and children. We all know how hard kids and teens can be on each other and how self conscious teens can be about their bodies.

Lume Drawbacks
No product is perfect for everyone – here are a few problems with Lume.

It is expensive.
Lume costs more compared to some other natural or long-lasting deodorants. However, you can’t really compare them because Lume works from head to toe on different body odors. It’s also heavily concentrated so a little goes a long way. That means it will last a lot longer.

One application of Lume deodorant, whether it is through the tube or the stick, can last up to 72 hours, which is 3 days! That is three days without stink!

You will also notice that with regular use, you will start applying the deodorant less frequently. This will ultimately make the product last longer. So broken down by use, it’s not as pricey as you might think.

Don’t forget that typically, you only need a small pea-size amount.

It also takes the place of other products that men and women use to cover foul smells.

The Deodorant Stopped Working after 3 Months

Some people complain that Lume stopped working after a few months. If that happens, don’t give up. Apply just a small amount.
Be sure to let Lume dry before you put on clothes. This is important because if the deodorant is wet, it will rub off your skin and onto your clothes instead of your skin, making it ineffective.

I find that my workout clothes are usually the culprits. They’ve got a lot of sweat build up on them. I need to prep them, get new ones or use a different deodorant when I wear them.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are some common questions about Lume.

How long will one container last?
It depends on each person and how you use it. Obviously if you’re using it all over it won’t last as long as if it’s only a deodorant.
As a guideline, a 2.2 ounce stick deodorant typically provide 110-220 applications whereas 3.0 ounces of the tube deodorant guarantees up to 300 applications.

Lume has worked well on some days while not on others. Why?
The main reason for the ineffectiveness on some days is the stubborn body odors that stick in different pieces of clothing – especially synthetic fabrics like polyester. You may need to treat your clothes (see video above).

Often this occurs if you are using deodorants or perfumes from a different brand than Lume. Typically, deodorants or antiperspirants contain aluminum. The aluminum binds the deodorant material to your clothing.

These products are usually waxy and oil-based and when mixed with aluminum, they stick to your clothes. Then all it takes to make bacteria stink is a bit of moisture (sweat) and body heat to activate the unpleasant smell that comes with sweating.

The other reason for it not working can be that you are not giving the deodorant enough time to dry on your skin. Unfortunately, there may be clothes that have so much wax and sweat build up (like your older work out clothes) that Lume won’t be effective when you wear them.
