My Honest LipSense Review

This post was most recently updated on May 23rd, 2018

There are so many LipSense Reviews on sites like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. It seems like LipSense is everywhere now. If you’re wondering what LipSense is all about, here’s my Lipsense review…

I first tried LipSense over 10 years ago – long before most people had heard of it. The packaging was a bit dated looking and I was skeptical that the color would really last all day. Still I was convinced enough to try it even though no one else I knew had heard of it. The closest person who sold LipSense was almost an hour away from me. Today, there are a lot more people who know about LipSense. It’s become a huge makeup trend and it’s everywhere now.

Even celebrities like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Courteney Cox and others wear LipSense.

Lipsense Review

As we age we need more definition to our lips because over time your lips lose volume and color. It’s especially important to have lip color that lasts for pictures, on camera, special occasions, at work or for special occasions.

I try never to have a picture taken of me when I’m not wearing lip color because it makes such a big difference in my confidence. Lipstick can literally change how people think of you. One study found that people perceive photographs of women who are wearing makeup as healthier, more likely to be hired, more attractive and more confident.

Another study found that people took 250 milliseconds to rate a woman with makeup as more attractive than those without makeup.

This morning my husband looked at me and remarked, “you must’ve slept well – you look well rested”. I laughed because I was so tired. He’s never said that before. The only change is that I had some residual LipSense on from the day before (it stays on!).

You want to look your best and lipstick or lip stain as LipSense calls it can make a huge difference in how you look because it makes you look more polished. LipSense goes on like a gloss (but covers like a lipstick). LipSense, my anti-aging facial cleanser (that cleared up my skin for good) and mascara are the things in my beauty routine that I can’t live without. I’m willing to pay more them because they do so much. I’ve tried a lot of drugstore and even expensive brands of lipstick but almost everything I have now is LipSense.

What is LipSense?

LipSense is a pharmaceutical grade lipcolor made with pure pigments and botanicals. It’s a natural, premium quality lip stain and gloss combo that looks like lipstick but goes on like gloss. It’s very light so it doesn’t seem like you’re wearing anything. But what LipSense is most known for is that it lasts 4 to 18 hours (depending on the color and your personal eating and other habits). It’s made by a company called SeneGence.

LipSense is waterproof. It will not come off on your glass, your husband or boyfriend’s collar, his lips, or anywhere else. Once you put it on it stays. I have never had it shear, clump or come off. It really does stay on all day. I’ve even worn it to bed and woke up the next morning with lipstick still on the next day!

You can get it in over 50 shades along with various glosses from shimmer, to frost and matte. You can create thousands of combinations and looks by layering colors. Senegence comes out with new shades and limited edition shades colors so there are always something new. LipSense comes in over 36 different shades – which is way more than any other long wearing lipstick I’ve tried. Usually they have maybe 6 colors and none are perfect for me. Plus you can’t layer them to come up with your own signature shades like you can with LipSense.

How to Buy Lipsense

Want to know where to buy LipSense? Unfortunately, the company doesn’t allow online sales where you have a shopping cart (which would be easier for all of us!). You must purchase LipSense from a distributor but I’ve also seen in on Amazon and eBay. Normally it costs a little less and you can easily know what’s available. On Amazon you can find sellers who have, “make an offer” so you can negotiate the price.

Senegence wants you to go through a distributor but in my experience that can be a hassle unless they’re close by and someone you know. Coordinating can be a pain and normally they ship it to you anyway.

My LipSense Experience

I bought LipSense from a distributor named Leta Greene. She puts various colors of LipSense on her forearm in thick stripes to demonstrate how the colors stay on and to help you match your skin tone for the perfect color. Not only that, it shows how the color stays.

It looks like this:

LipSense colors I have
LipSense colors

She put some LipSense on my forearm. Later I was at a department store and since I was heading somewhere, I wanted to get the color off but I couldn’t get it off on my own. I stopped by a makeup counter and asked the sales lady if she had a makeup remover cloth. She got me one and watched me try to remove it but it wasn’t coming off. She couldn’t believe it and finally asked, what is this stuff?? I told her it’s LipSense and I was just trying it out but it’s supposed to be long-wearing. Right then I knew this was exactly what they say it is, long lasting lip color.

It just wasn’t worth the effort unless I wanted to impress. I remember my stylish friend took me to her very stylish friend’s house. She handed me some lipstick and told me to put some on. I did. Having great looking lips makes every outfit look better. The problem with lipstick is it doesn’t last. Put it on and an hour later it’s off again. Once i tried Lipsense loved it so much I threw out my other lipstick.

Before LipSense I didn’t like to wear lipstick except on special occasions. I hated how drying it was and how it comes off on everything! The shea butter and other ingredients are moisturizing. The more you use Lipsense the more hydrated, smooth and soft your lips get. So far I’ve only tried the regular gloss and the shimmer. I look forward to trying the matte to see how it performs.

I have so many shades now. I’ve got a red that I wear if I want to be a vixen – just kidding, but really it seems to do something to men. I get a lot more looks and stares. Once I wore it in public and got hit on by a stranger while my husband was off getting his food. I could’ve had a lunch date (I guess the man missed that I had a sleeping baby in a stroller next to me). I also have a very dark (almost black) color that I use for Halloween or to darken some of the lighter colors that don’t show up as well on my skin. LipSense is great for costumes or dress up.

LipSense Colors

Here are the LipSense colors. If you don’t see a color you want I can suggest an another color that will match as closely as possible. I like Blu-Red for a classic red and Beige Champagne or Luv It (they are lighter pinks) for everyday wear. My absolute go to is Precious Topaz which is a medium shade. That’s what I wore for probably 6 years before trying any other color. Kiss for a Cause is great for younger girls and for dance competitions – since it stays on.

Not listed here but was brought back – black lipstick called Blackberry. It’s the best to layer and darken lighter shades and for costume makeup that doesn’t smudge or come off. Plus it wears very light and isn’t just for lips either. I love it for Halloween.

LipSense Gloss

Gloss is what keeps your color on and makes it last. You can change-up your look with gloss – here are the kinds you can choose from. It’s really important to have enough. I usually have at least 3 – one for my purse, for the car and by my bed. Glossy is a must. The glitters are fun and matte is ideal to make a deep red matte lip.

I actually love to use matte first to set/blend the color and then glossy. The glossy is slippery (how to explain?) on its own sometimes and doesn’t blend the color in the same way as matte does. It’s tough to explain but I especially recommend both for the strong red colors.

Lipsense Glosses
Choose Oops! remover (optional)

The Oops remover will help you take LipSense off your lips or around them – in case you mess up. It’s especially important if you order a red or a darker color because mistakes show up more easily.

LipSense Retail Price

If you’ve never ordered LipSense, I recommend a Starter Kit which includes a color, a gloss and Ooops remover. A starter kit is 1 color, 1 gloss and 1 remover for $55. Otherwise, colors are $25 each for colors and glosses are $20.

Wear Test

I’ve been wearing LipSense for years and it’s passed the wear test. I find it to be completely kiss-proof, smudge-proof, and waterproof as long as I apply it right (it takes a little patience but it’s worth it). It lasts through my day, including through eating, talking, kissing and everything else. I do notice that if my lips are flakier or dry (as in dry skin, not the opposite of wet) then the color doesn’t last as long. It’s there long after I forget that I’m wearing anything on my lips. Sometimes I panic because I can’t feel anything, then I check and yay, it’s still there!

It’s super important to reapply the gloss whenever you get dry. If I don’t do that then the color starts to slough off. To make it last longer you can apply the gloss right before you eat to create more of a barrier between the food. That helps to minimize fading. Another tip is for the “water line” or the part of your lip close to your gums that stays wet. Literally dry that off with a dry washcloth and then apply.

How to Apply LipSense

Lipsense application has two parts, the base color which is the color, and the gloss which is the finish. Some of the glosses have color but it’s hardly noticeable. Sometimes I do wear it alone though. Like doing your nails, you have a top coat or color and a top coat that protects the color.

  • Step 1: Shake the bottle and blend the color to clean, dry lips. Always shake first. You MUST have healthy lips! Otherwise you may need to exfoliate them first – you can do this with a toothbrush. You can use coconut oil (or any non colored lip product that doesn’t contain wax). Put some onto your finger and then dip your finger into sugar and scrub. Allow to dry.
  • Step 2: Apply a thin layer in one direction. Start at your cupid’s bow and trace each side. On the bottom lip, apply in one direction from corner to corner. Let it dry.
  • Step 3: Apply the next layer and allow to dry – apply up to 3 layers of the same or different colors to create the look you love.
  • Step 4: Apply gloss to seal in the color and add shine or shimmer. Or, go for a matte look.

Reapply gloss every time your lips feel dry or every 4-6 hours.

how to apply lipsense

Here is a video that demonstrates LipSense application:

What’s Good

  • Number of colors, there’s something for every skin tone and taste (this is one of the biggest selling points, no one else has near that many colors)
  • Non toxic
  • Hydrating
  • Although it covers completely, the color goes on lite, like a gloss
  • The gloss comes in clear, colors, glitter and matte to change-up your look
  • It never clumps around the bottle or on your lips, but it’s smooth and flawless
  • Unlike lipstick it cannot get broken and doesn’t dry or flake unless you don’t reapply the gloss
  • Lightweight and easy to carry in your purse or pocket
  • Won’t melt if you leave it in the car or in the hot sun – lipstick can make a huge mess!

What’s Bad

  • The packaging is not as fun and hip as I wish but that’s not a big deal – still I’d love for them to redesign it.
  • There’s a slight burning when you first apply Lipsense (because it has a little alcohol in it to keep it sanitary) – the more you use it the less you notice.
  • Like lipstick, Lipsense has a smell to it but it’s not bothersome – no lipstick smells great but I wish LipSense came in fun scents!
  • They sometimes discontinue my favorite colors 🙁

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is it Safe for Kids?

I let my daughter wear LipSense (Kiss for a Cause LipSense) for her dance performance. It’s still on after the performance and afterwards for the photos. She always wants to wear my makeup and I won’t let her wear regular lipstick because it smears and gets everywhere. Sometimes I let her wear one of the lighter pink shades of LipSense because it’s just enough color to be pretty and not too much for a little girl.

Oh, and that time my daughter and her friend used LipSense to paint their whole face for FUN? I used the Oops! remover and it took it off.

LipSense is also perfect for pre-teens or teen because again, so many colors and options to get the right shade and they don’t have to keep re-applying.

Q. Is LipSense safe?

The Cosmetics Database gave the ingredients in LipSense a score of 3/10. It’s non toxic and has botanicals. There are no toxic ingredients.

lipsense ingredientsLipsense Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Acrylates Copolymer, Hexylene Glycol, Silicone Quaternium-3, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Orchis Morio (Orchid) Flower Extract, Algae Extract, Yeast Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexyglycerin, Propylene Glycol, Urea, Glucosamine HCL, Trideceth-12, Sodium Alginate, Phenoxyethanol. MAY CONTAIN: Eclipta Prostrata Extract, Cocconia Indica Flower Extract, Amino Esters-1, Pearl Powder, Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Curcuma Longa (Tumeric) Root Extract.

Q. Is LipSense Toxic?

In addition, LipSense has NO lead or artificial wax. It is also Gluten-Free & Kosher.

Q. Does LipSense dry your lips?

If you only apply the color then yes. But if used correctly, with gloss then your lips will not be dry and they’ll look dewey. As I get older and because I live in a dry climate, I want as much moisture as I can get. I only feel dry if I don’t apply gloss. In addition, I appreciate any cosmetics that are anti-aging to prevent wrinkles and fine lines, especially on my lips.

Q. How long does one Lipsense tube last?
One tube of LipSense lasts about six months if you use it daily.

Q. Are there any Lipsense alternatives?

I haven’t come across any yet. If you do, let me know.

Q. Does Lipsense tingle when you apply it?
Yes, it does have a slight burning sensation when you first apply Lipsense, because of the alcohol that keeps it germ free. It goes away quickly though. Note: some people may be allergic to this or any cosmetic. The sting has never bothered me. It goes away when the color dries.

Q. Is LipSense vegan?
Yes, all of LipSense Shea butter glosses are vegan (no animal emulsifiers or animal by-products).

Q. Is Lipsense tested on animals?
Nothing sold by Senegence, including LipSense, is ever tested on animals.

Q. Does Lipsense have sunscreen in it?
LipSense provides a natural shield from the sun that is like an SPF 15. Rather than a chemical shield LipSense helps create a mechanical cover for your lips.
If you try it, you’ll understand why so many women go crazy about it. It’s one of those products (like my skin care) that once you find, you never want to change.

You’ll panic if your gloss starts getting low and stash a few extra in the car, coat pockets and purse just to make sure you don’t run out. You’ll know what I feel like when my favorite color is running low. You can’t live without it.

I’m sorry for making you into a Lipsense addict. Just make sure you clear some space in the bathroom drawer to hold your collection. At least it doesn’t take up as much room your shoe addiction!

  • I’m not sure if the Lipsense formulas have changed since you wrote this, but the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database shows that these lipsticks are a 4 or a 5 out of 10. This may not sound terrible, but these products do contain parabens, dimethicone and octoxynol-40. These are all toxic substances.

The biggest problem these products pose, according to EWG, is allergies. But hormone disruption still shows up.

While the FDA claims these ingredients are safe to use because the amount is so minimal, what it fails to recognize is how ubiquitous they are and how often one person uses them. So the seemingly insignificant amount builds up to something much more problematic. And of greatest concern to me is the hormone disruption. Day after day, product after product, we are slathering these toxins on our skin in the name of health and beauty. The skin being our largest organ, absorbs all of it. And while we might still be beautiful, healthy is a long way off.

  • I looked at the database and it is a 4 or 5 but otherwise not much information. It looks like the gloss has dimethicone but not the colors. It beats regular lipstick but yes, if you’re concerned about these products I’d go for a more natural brand. Is there one you recommend?
    Thanks for your comment!

  • What I don’t understand is why everywhere I see “blogs” about how awesome Lipsense is (because it’s absolutely amazing) there is someone (specifically from the 100% real link on the other comment) trying soooo hard to discredit Lipsense and SeneGence and the ingredients!! To make it look like it’s toxic for you, which is absolutely HILARIOUS! You just want people to click your link and BUY YOUR 100% “real” and “natural” and “organic” and whatever WORDS you can throw in there to MARKET to innocent people who will latch onto the words and your “claims” about Lipsense being toxic and so on! In the end it’s YOU who looks terrible…and I purchased your “so called” REAL AND NATURAL products and they’re absolute CRAP! You disguise your words to make them look like they’re better for everyone but they’re absolutely not. Lipsense is such a QUALITY product and ALL of SeneGence products are amazing and well worth the money. You charge $25 or more for a “traditional” lipstick made out of all these supposedly “better” things for you…but it’s all MARKETING and MONEY. One of your lipsticks is a 4th of a tube of Lipsense for the same price? I don’t encourage anyone to buy the products that she linked for your “100% REAL” products but if you do end up trying it, you’ll send it back and demand a refund. Stop going around on every single blog and people’s Facebook Groups and bashing everyone else’s healthy awesome products to TRY to make yours look better, in the end people will figure it out. All SeneGence products are amazing, I’ve been using them for 6 plus years and my skin and health have improved better than ever.

  • I read a comment/review,. It stated that it made it lips puffy, not sure what they exactly ment by that, but my lips have a very weird “feel” to them, and they appear to have a puffiness to where I had the lipsense applied(I didn’t get it to the edges of my lips) and they are tender, I have weird allergies, sulfa a big one, I looked at the ingredients and I didn’t see anything related to that,. Do you have any recommendations for this kind of issue??

    Thanks for your time,
    Teri Kochheiser

  • Hi Teri, the alcohol in LipSense is to keep it sanitary but it adds a little sting when you first apply it. It doesn’t make your lips puffier – although Senegence does offer a lip plumping product (I didn’t think it made any difference and haven’t found anything that does beyond injections which I won’t do). You should be fine but there’s no way to know for sure. If you have an allergic reaction then it will make your lips puffy temporarily (too bad you can’t artificially cause an allergic reaction enough to get the effect without the pain part). They do offer a warranty so you could return it if you had a problem.
    Hope that helps,
    Janet
