LEVOIT Cool and Warm Mist Humidifier Review

Are you looking for a cool and warm mist humidifier that has extra features without a high price tag? I previously reviewed the Venta humidifier/air purifier and it’s still a favorite but the price tag is a bit steep so I wanted to find a more affordable humidifier for your kid’s rooms.

Warm or Cool Mist Humidifier?

The difference between a warm and cool mist humidifier mostly comes down to preference and if you want to cool or warm the air. Both do an equally good job of adding moisture to the air and delivering the benefits of a humidifier. However, a general recommendation is get a cool mist humidifier if you use yours mostly in the summer or if you live in a warm climate. If you live in a cold climate a warm mist humidifier will warm up the room. If you have a young child the warm mist can burn child if they touch it.

In our climate we need a humidifier more often in the winter so we would choose a warm mist humidifier. It will help cool the air or at least not add heat. Still, we get hot, dry summers when a cool mist humidifier will be better.

If you’re wondering which to get – a warm or a cool mist humidifier – the good news is, you don’t have to choose…

Cool AND Warm Mist Humidifier

We wanted to find a humidifier for our kids room that would last longer than one or two seasons. Our criteria:

  • Under $100
  • Durable
  • No filter humidifier that’s not hard to refill – filters are a pain to replace, add to the cost of ownership and can get moldy/gross.
  • Auto shut-off feature

After research we settled on the Levoit Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier. It fit our criteria and had strong reviews plus it even had a nice extra we hoped for – the addition of aromatherapy.

DISCLAIMER: we researched and then reached out to Levoit to get a humidifier for this review. We were given the Levoit humidifier but were not paid for this review. If you use our affiliate link here we do earn a small commission on your purchase.

Humidified Air Can Prevent Spread of the Flu Virus

Higher humidity can slow the spread of the flu virus. According to a WebMd study: when humidity levels were set to 43%, only 14% of the flu virus particles the researchers released were able to transmit the influenza virus, compared with a transmission rate of 70% to 77% in a relatively low-humidity environment (23%).

It works fast too…

“What’s more, the protective impact of higher humidity levels appeared to be rapid, with the majority of viral inactivation taking place within 15 minutes of when viral particles were first “coughed” into a high-humidity environment.”

LIKES

The look. Very sleek and modern – drawn to the simple design and compactness (not big and bulky). Easy to see water level. Buttons are clear display. Quiet.

Cut down on waste and cost of ownership because no filters to replace and the essential oil diffuser pads can be cleaned and reused.

Buttons can be lit up or turned off. Hold down the auto button to turn off. Unfortunately you can’t turn off the Levoit entirely with the remote, it’s more like a standby mode.

DISLIKES

Confusing buttons.
The handle is underneath the nozzle so you have an extra part to take off when you go to refill your humidifier.

Top 5 Features of the Levoit Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier

We liked the Levoit’s styling better than Vick’s or Homedics humidifier brands which more people are probably familiar with and that you can buy at most stores. We find the shapes more difficult to clean and surprisingly, the reviews on Vick’s own website were not very promising. Plus they don’t offer a model with both cool and warm mist. Even though the price is lower than the Levoit, the value isn’t there.

The Homedics warm and cool mist humidifier is the highest rated humidifier on their site and is slightly more than the Levoit. It doesn’t have the aromatherapy feature or the remote. Plus we like the look of the Levoit better.

1. Has Both Warm and Cool Mist Settings

Use can choose whether to run the warm or cool mist. In the winter you’ll want the warm mist to warm up the room and keep it comfortable. In the summer, put it on the cool setting. It has 3 different levels so you can control how fast the room is humidified. Levoit says on the cool setting it increases humidity levels 25% quicker than devices that only have cool mist. It also keeps a memory of your settings to save you time/hassle of remembering what you like.

2. Humidity Level Readout and Auto Mode

This humidifier has a built in hygrometer to read the humidity levels in a room. It gives you a readout of the actual humidity level in your room so you don’t over or under humidify. This is a feature that isn’t available with lower end humidifiers. If you prefer you can leave it in Auto mode. It’s a smart mode that will automatically diffuse mist to adjust the humidity to the most suitable level.

3 Auto Shut off and Timer

You can program your humidifier to run for a set timeframe – anywhere from 1 to 12 hours. The best part is the humidifier automatically turns (or goes in stand by mode) so it doesn’t continue to humidify.

Holds just over a gallon of water so you can go for 1-3 days on a Refill

Hate to refill the water all the time. Just when you’re putting the kids to bed and your tired you realize the humidifier is out of water. The Levoit has a Large 6L capacity allows for 20 to 36 hours of continuous use and you can see where you’re at with a glance.

My humidifier for my daughter’s room doesn’t fit in the bathroom sink so it’s a pain to refill and it’s an awkward shape that is difficult to get lined up right. The Levoit is much easier.

5. Has an aroma pad for essential oils

Comes with 2 aroma pads that go in the side. A lot of humidifiers say not to put anything in them but you can with this one. So some lavender to promote calm and sleep, some eucalyptus to ease congestion, etc.  One person said she put a little Myrrh oil on it and the steam smells great.

CONCLUSION

If there’s anything that will go wrong it’s the potential to develop leaks and for the humidity readout not to work. Those were the most common complaints about the Levoit. However, when compared to the more familiar brands, the Levoit is clearly superior.

It comes with a 2-year warranty and lifetime support from Levoit. When you buy through Amazon, you have the option to add on 3 years with a 3rd party insurance company. It’s $5.94 for the 3 year extension – I would take it if anything so you know you’re good for 5 years.
