How to Get Smell out of Sweaters
This post was most recently updated on February 13th, 2020
It’s fall and you know what that means? It’s sweater weather! But the problem is your sweater has been in storage for months. When you pull them out, they don’t always smell great. Even if you sprayed your favorite perfume.
A lot of times your sweaters haven’t been able to breathe as they’ve been packed away. So when you pull them out, they smelled a bit musty. Or, if you smell under the arms, there’s BO smell too!
Even if you don’t read the whole post, here’s what makes the difference between stink or no stink: use a water-based deodorant. A lot have oils and that sticks on your sweaters and traps the smell.
I really love Lume deodorant (more like a cream) because it’s water based. As such, you have to use a small amount and make sure that it dries before you put on your sweater.

Deodorants and Antiperspirants Build Up on Clothes and Smell
Most deodorants or antiperspirants have waxes and oils in them – even natural brands do. Over time they build-up and leave residue on your clothes. When your underarms get warm, it seals in the smell. The substances left behind literally melt into the fabrics (especially man-made ones like polyester!). And it doesn’t just wash out. It stays. Forever.

How to Get Armpit Smell out of Sweater
For washable sweaters, Lume (a natural deodorant) recommends you use an enzyme detergent like Persil or an enzyme spray like Nature’s Miracle. Spray them on the armpits of your sweater and let them sit before washing.

For best results, spritz the underarms of your sweater or clothes after you take them off.
Then feel free to raise your arms. No stink! But if you want to prevent having to take this step, find a water based deodorant that won’t build up and stink up your sweaters.
Use a Water Based Deodorant
Lume is water-based deodorant that easily washes out of clothes. It has a creamy thicker lotion like consistency and won’t build up. Comes in all natural scents (very subtle and the scents fade quickly). After an hour or less, you won’t smell like body odor OR a scent.
Aluminum free, wax and oil free. Hypoallergenic. If you shower, you’ll wash it off, so you’ll need to reapply. Otherwise Lume lasts for up to 72 hours (3 days!!).

Lume is saving my clothes, not just my sweaters. It helps destink my 8 year old daughter’s armpits. I hope it helps you too!
