Beauty and the Beast and The Making of Belle’s Dress

This weekend we took Alexis to see Beauty and The Beast. We loved it so much! It was enchanting and romantic. There was so much more detail about the story in the live action film than in the animated version. Even my husband loved it and was captivated. Emma Watson was the perfect blend of a provincial girl turned princess. She wasn’t overdone or too over the top but she still shone!

Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast had the seventh-biggest domestic box-office launch of all time according to The Hollywood Reporter. It actually knocked Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 from the spot it held as #7 and it could even bump up to #6 soon!

After seeing Beauty and the Beast, we can’t wait for the theatrical releases of more Disney movies – we’ll see all of them. The only difference is that next time we’ll know not to wait to book tickets. We bought them a few days before but it was almost sold out. Next time I want to get better seats instead of taking what’s left!

The best part besides the actual film was that Alexis borrowed her friend Lily’s Belle dress to wear. She said she wanted to be “the real deal” which meant that she HAD TO get a red rose for her to hold. It was her idea. So at the last minute we ran to the grocery store to get one.

Alexis loved the attention!! Here she is in the lobby getting her picture taken…

Alexis poses with her rose before seeing Beauty and the Beast – the live action film.

She smiled as she walked through the adoring crowds. People pointed and smiled. Look at the princess! people said. Grown men grinned. I think she was the only kid in costume and she really played it up! And of course when we got home I had to buy her a Belle dress. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one exactly like the one she has on (made by Disney) but I found one I think she’ll love. Alexis saw her friend at the theater and guess what? At the end of the show she gave her the rose. I thought that was so sweet!

I know this princess phase will pass (ok, to be honest, I hope it will) but she’s my last kid and it’s fun to play along.

Beauty and the Beast Dress

There’s something magical about 5 year olds. Today I learned that Dan Stevens who played the beast, has a 7-year old daughter named Willow. During the filming, when Willow was just 5 years old, Emma Watson came over for dinner. While she was there, Willow drew some designs and one of them ended up being the basis for the iconic dress that Belle wore in the movie!

We chose this dress. There are so many but they are selling out fast so it’s hard to find one in her size.

We had to get gloves to match.

Beauty and the Beast Infographic: The Making of the Dress Scene

It took a lot of time and material to create Belle’s iconic yellow ball gown that little girls and women dream of after seeing the dance. This infographic has some of the amazing details. When Belle comes out and the organza ruffles we all held our breath in anticipation. The romance felt so real – there’s better chemistry between Belle and the beast than you can imagine. I couldn’t find anywhere that listed an estimated cost to make the dress, so if anyone finds that please comment and let me know.

Want to learn more about the dress? Here’s some trivia from E! News

Beauty and the Beast infographic

“I really embraced working on the dress, making sure that it was utterly whimsical, and magical. The scene that I wear that dress in, and I have that dance in, it really tells the story of Beast and Belle falling in love. You know, we don’t have a huge amount of time in the story to tell that story. The dance, for me, is really where the audience starts to see it happening and starts knowing that it is happening. This is total, blissful escapism. You are transported to another world. The dress, and the dancing, and the candlelight, and the music — it was really fun to work on every aspect of that…” – Emma Watson

Going Crazy for Beauty and the Beast Items

During dance class another mom and I were talking about the movie. She’s the kind of mom who goes ALL OUT. Pretty soon we started talking Beauty and the Beast, pulling out our phones to find our daughters a Belle dress…and falling down the rabbit hole. Purses, shoes, dresses, crowns, tiaras…it goes on and on. Unfortunately Alexis saw what the other mom ordered and started to compare, which I put a stop to right away. But we did get a dress and gloves because I know she’ll go crazy wearing them and playing with her friends.

Beauty and the Beast High Heels

Alexis doesn’t walk well in heels but there are a ton of darling Beauty and the Beast shoes on Amazon we fell in love with. Tip for moms: don’t let your daughter see what another mom is buying for her daughter! Alexis wanted everything to go with her dress (but didn’t get it all).

Beauty and the Beast Jewelry

In the movie, Belle wears beautiful hand-painted shoes with golden flowers which are heels and which I couldn’t find any replicas of yet. I’m sure there will be teapot bracelets, Belle necklaces and other jewelry from the movies to complete the look. Here are just a few…

Beauty and the Beast Soundtrack

Now when we fall in love with a movie we immediately want to listen to the music. We have to have the soundtrack to listen to while we wait to see it again. The Beauty and the Beast DVD and Blu-ray release date is estimated for July 2017. You can pre-order it here.

Speaking of Beauty and the Beast music – I love this compilation of Beauty and the Beast music by Lindsey Stirling! I think she could play Belle too!

Have you seen Beauty and The Beast? If so, what did you think? Did you love it like we did?
