Purple mattress review: updated April 2017
We got a Purple mattress when Purple was brand new and just launched on Kickstarter. Since we had only had our mattress for a few months when I wrote our Purple mattress review, I recently updated it. We have now slept on Purple for over a year and feel qualified to give a thorough review.
Purple Mattress Review
Before we got our Purple mattress we were sleeping on a $3,000 mattress and it was about 8 years old. It needed to be replaced because it had already developed deep body imprints, peaks and valleys where we slept.
When we first got our Purple mattress I wasn’t in love with it. There was an initial adjustment period for me (but not for my husband Stephen). I lost some sleep. I was grouchy. Then something changed. We went on a short trip and I slept on an awful hotel room mattress. It was sloped so bad that I ended up squished on the edge of the bed feeling like I might slide onto the floor at any moment. It was so bad that I couldn’t wait to go home and sleep on our mattress. After that experience, everything clicked and I have loved my Purple mattress since then. I miss it when we travel. I sleep best on it.
We actually owned a baby mattress with similar technology, made by Intellibed. It was about $400, but man was it durable! It would probably last through every single kid you have, even if you have 10 (so it might be a good investment for people with a lot of kids, or daycares). Here’s how it lasted: it looked BRAND NEW after 4 years. Have you ever seen baby mattresses and how beat up and destroyed they get after just 1 baby??? So that makes me think our Purple mattress is going to last a long, long time too and it’s a LOT LESS EXPENSIVE. Even if it doesn’t last as long as premium priced mattresses, it should be good for 5-7 years at least and that means it costs less in 10 years even if you went through two of them.
How Purple Mattress is Different
Purple says theirs is a no pressure mattress. They mean Purple will hold your body and not put pressure on your “pressure points” causing you to toss and turn. It’s also no pressure because you can return it if you’re not totally happy with your new mattress. Beyond that, if you want more about how Purple mattresses are different, click on this link about the science of Purple.
Purple mattress does not have any springs or coils. That means it can be rolled up and shipped to you. Coils can’t break or stretch. Instead of springs, Purple is made of layers which I describe below.
Purple launched with the video. Not only is the video informative but it’s entertaining. If you’re local you might recognize Goldilocks is Mallory Everton from Studio C. What you may not know is they didn’t just have her promote Purple mattress. She was required to sleep on a Purple bed to make sure she knew and loved the mattress before she made the video.
Purple Mattress Firmness
Purple is about a 6.5 on the firmness scale, so even with the stretchy layer it is more firm than you might expect. However, it supports your back and evenly distributes your body weight. The Purple mattress was firmer than I expected. In fact, my mom wanted a softer feel so she added a pillow top on her mattress, such as this mattress topper to add some softness. Purple does not recommend that you use a topper because it takes away from its ability to cushion you but everyone has personal preference as to the feel of their mattress.
I’m a side sleeper and my husband is a back sleeper. I noticed we both do not toss and turn nearly as much since sleeping on Purple.
Verdict: best medium firm mattress for couples
Purple is Not a Memory Foam Mattress
Purple is a multi-layer mattress with an air chamber suspension on the top of 2 foam layers. The result is that more air circulates around you. This design is great if you get warm when you sleep or if you sleep hot.
A lot of people think that Purple is made of memory foam but it’s not. Purple is actually made of what they call “hyper elastic polymer”. This is the part that is purple and makes up the the top layer. It’s like a matrix and is stretchy in all directions. Under the purple layer there are layers of high grade foam. However, the foam is not memory foam. You won’t sink into it. Instead it cradles your body and doesn’t hit pressure points in the way a solid top mattress will. This means less tossing and turning and higher sleep quality.
Most people report that Purple sleep cool and I’ve found the temperature to be just right compared to a memory foam mattress, as they tend to sleep hot.
Purple only sells the top mattress. You need to buy box springs (although they don’t recommend it) or bed base or platform to put it on. Here’s a popular one on Amazon.
Layers of a Purple bed:
What’s Inside a Purple Mattress
Purple is made up of foam (not memory foam) and a layer of polymer (the purple stuff). They use premium high-density foams in addition to the purple top layer which is 2 inches of a stretchy polymer.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s inside:
3.25” – 1.8 lb/ft³ medium-soft comfort layer
4.00” – 2.0 lb/ft2³ medium-firm support layer
The foam is certified by CertiPUR-US®
CertiPUR-US® approved foams are:
Made without ozone depleters
Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants
Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals
Made without formaldehyde
Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million). All of which is, of course, topped with and protected by 2″ of Purple™ — so it’ll last even longer than your average high-density foam.
By the way, any time you buy a new mattress or pillow BE SURE to buy and put on a mattress protector. Once your sweat, skin cells, food particles, pee and anything else hits that mattress it starts to wear down. You’ll get the most wear from your mattress if you prevent any liquid or bacteria from getting to it in the first place. Just consider it part of the price of a new mattress – and be sure to do the same for your pillows. They can get nasty, smelly and gross.
Purple Mattress Prices
Purple is a premium mattress at a fair price. In fact, I think Purple mattresses are dirt cheap! Still, if you need it, they do have a financing plan so you can pay as you go. You can check that out here, on the OnPurple website.
Purple Mattress price
All prices include FREE shipping and these prices reflect a $100 discount.
The Purple twin mattress has an extra 2 inches in length compared to a regular twin. Our daughter has a twin and it fits the frame just fine. I actually wouldn’t have noticed if no one had told me that it was longer. We have a king. Purple comes in twin, queen, king and California king.
Where to Buy a Purple Mattress
Purple mattress is only sold online. You can go to their website, find the “shop” section and see all the prices and styles available. To take a look at the Purple mattress, just go here and go to their website.
If you live close to Purple headquarters in Alpine, Utah, you can go to their factory and try out a bed. The reason it’s only sold online is to keep the prices down. Plus, you have no salespeople or pressure to buy. You cannot really tell what a bed is like until you sleep on it for at least a few weeks anyway. Instead of trying to figure it out, you can rely on their warranty.
Why You Should Not Buy a Purple Mattress on Amazon
You can buy Purple on Amazon but I don’t recommend it. Here’s why: you don’t get the long warranty of 101 days if you order through Amazon. Instead you will have 30 days. That’s still enough time for most people to see if they like it (you can’t lie on a mattress from a mattress store for 30 days and then return it). Here’s the kicker though – you’ll have to pay the return shipping. If you order from Purple it does not cost you.
So I recommend that you get the 100 nights and free returns by buying directly through Purple’s website, not through Amazon. Only go to Amazon to check out the reviews of Purple mattress from others who have purchased one.
What should you buy on Amazon? All the things you need for your mattress and bedroom to keep your mattress sanitary and to help it last as long as possible:
- A 100% waterproof mattress protector
- Pillows (I can’t stand Purple pillows) and pillow protectors
- New bamboo sheets that are wrinkle free, or these jersey sheets with stretch
- A platform mattress base like this one, or something fancier like this one. I really like Zinus brand. Purple doesn’t recommend box springs because the mattress is so heavy and is better supported with a mattress base.
Purple Mattress Warranty and Return Policy
Purple mattress has a 100 night warranty initially and a 10 year full replacement warranty.
Purple has made buying a mattress less risky. If you go into a showroom and lie down on a mattress to test it, you can’t really know what it is like. You really need to sleep on it for a while. With Purple I recommend you give it 2 weeks before you decide if it’s for you. If you don’t like it after sleeping on it for 100 nights, you can return it for a full refund, no questions asked. That’s better than trying something out in the showroom and knowing once you buy the mattress, you’re stuck with it. Lying down for 15 minutes is not the same as sleeping on a mattress for 8 hours! I don’t know about you but I felt like I was stuck with whatever I decided to buy because there was no returning it!
If by chance you want to return your mattress, they will pick it up at your house. You don’t have to put in the packaging or worry about paying for shipping. They’ll take it away and you won’t have to worry about it. To me that is no risk! Purple mattresses are donated to local charities like homeless shelters.
Purple comes with a 10 year warranty. The 10 years and they will cover any indentations that are 1 inch or deeper. This is one of the best warranties you’ll find anywhere. The thing is most warranties are full of loopholes so big that it’s almost impossible to use them if you need to. This is 10 years full replacement warranty. Most mattress warranties require a 1.5 or 2 inch indentation requirements.
Purple Mattress Discount
Some websites say that they have a Purple mattress discount – but it’s the same discount offered to everyone on the Purple website. It’s just a marketing ploy. There has never been another discount that I’ve seen. I’ve only seen them offer free sheets when they first launched the sheets or maybe once a year, a Purple seat cushion. So rest assured that you’re paying the lowest price and they do not discount the mattress further.
Don’t wait though. Buy one, you won’t regret it. If you don’t like it, they’ll come pick it up. But give it at least 14 days to adjust before you decide.
Purple Mattresses Are Recyclable
I got to tour the factory to see how Purple is made. They have a machine that rolls a mattress into a carrying case. Yes, that was impressive. But even more impressive to me is the recycling aspect. The purple part of each mattress can be torn down and recycled! It’s just remelted down and can be used again. They were melting the purple pellets and it didn’t even smell. Try that with plastic – the fumes would be horrible. It’s pretty amazing that I couldn’t smell anything!
We were at a hotel in Vegas and saw all of these old mattresses. I asked someone who works there what happens to the mattresses. He told me they get ground down and made into dog beds (I’m not kidding). Purple mattresses get remade into more Purple products (like seat cushions).
A Purple Mattress is Non Toxic
The Purple gel material is completely safe and notoxic – it’s been tested for over 20 years. There are no toxins used in producing the material. It’s actually edible but I do not recommend that you eat it.
All foam off-gasses a little bit, but it’s gone within a few hours (memory foam might take up to a couple days, but Purple doesn’t use it in their products), and is virtually harmless. We noticed nothing at all. I visited the factory in Alpine, Utah. I was shocked that it hardly had an odor at all. There weren’t a ton of windows either. That was proof to me. I’ve been to factories that smelled awful and had a ton of chemical gas in the air – so much so that I couldn’t stand to be there very long.
Purple Mattress Review: The Best Mattress for Couples
Before we got Purple, our mattress had a large peak in the middle and two valleys where we slept. In the industry these are called body impressions. To snuggle we had to do what I called crossing the wake to get to the other side.
My husband, Stephen, is a big guy. Every time he moved on our last mattress, it was like a tidal wave in our bed. In mattress terms this is movement transfer. His movement woke me up so many nights and caused me to lose a lot of sleep. I’m not a picnic in the morning anyway but it’s worse when I’m exhausted. His moving around kept me awake more than new babies ever did (at least they grew out of waking up every few hours).
The #1 selling point of Purple to me is that the purple part is like a shock absorber so I don’t wake up when my husband moves around or gets up at night. Purple has saved me so much sleep and for that reason I don’t want another mattress that’s not Purple ever again.
Here’s what he said:
“After four nights our Purple mattress is awesome! I can get out of bed and Janet cannot even tell.”
You could describe me as the type of sleeper who doesn’t move. If it weren’t for Stephen all I do is turn down a corner, get into bed, and when I wake up, just put the corner back and the bed is made. You could put a glass of water next to me and it probably wouldn’t spill. Not so with Stephen. I really should give him a bed tax and make him make the bed at least twice as often as I do since he messes up the sheets more!
With Purple, Stephen can get up, shift around and not wake me up. I like other mattresses but not if we’re sleeping in the same bed. I don’t even like the idea of sharing a mattress at a hotel now. It’s not a vacation when you’re sleep deprived the whole time. Since having Purple I notice more a lot of hotel mattresses have sags. Plus, once again, Stephen wakes me up when he gets up or moves around.
My Only Complaint: I Wish the Bed Was Thicker
If it were a perfect world I’d like our Purple mattress to be 1 inch thicker because we’re used to that loft but our sheets fit fine and it’s not a big deal. I also wish you couldn’t see a slight ridge on the bottom edge where the purple part is. But those are minor issues I’m not sure anyone would notice.
You can get a mattress topper to add more loft.
Our Purple Mattress Unboxing Video
Ok, now what about the mattress itself – if you buy one, what does it look like? It comes in a giant roll, put into a plastic bag that has handles on it. When we first got a Purple mattress we created a fun video of us unboxing it to show you what it’s like when it arrives at your door.
The first thing we noticed when we unboxed our new mattress, is that Purple is HEAVY. Much heavier than it looks. Listen to me huffing and puffing in this video. I could barely lift it by myself even though it comes in a roll and has handles to help you lift it. Actually, heavy is good because it means it’s a quality mattress, but it’s bad if you want to try to move it. Even if you’re in good shape there is no doubt that it’s going to take two people and some muscle to put it on your box springs.
Here we are un-boxing our new king size Purple mattress:
Since this unboxing Purple has added a slicer – that looks a lot like a letter opener – in the package. Here’s how to open your Purple mattress:
- Lift your Purple mattress onto your bed frame or platform. If you want to purchase a bed platform directly from Purple, click here to go to their online store.
- Use the purple opener to cut down the length of the plastic tube. It will cut between the teeth of the zipper and through the fabric and plastic.
- Unroll the mattress from the several layers of purple fabric holding it together. It will magically inflate.
- Your bed is ready to sleep on right away.
Don’t overpay for your mattress:
Consumer Reports Review of Purple Mattress: Price Not an Indicator of Quality
Consumer Reports didn’t yet have a review when I looked or it was for paid members only. Overall, this is what they said: “We’ve tested mattresses that cost as little as $250 for a queen-sized mattress and others that cost nearly $8,000. Neither of them did particularly well in our tests,” said Celia Kuperszmid Lehrman, Consumer Reports home editor. So the point is you don’t need to overpay for a mattress to be high quality. “We’ve found that price isn’t a particularly good indicator of how supportive or durable a mattress will be. In fact, our tests have turned up plenty of fine mattresses that cost $1,000, or less,” Kuperszmid Lehrman said.
Sleep Quality After Almost a Year
I wish that I’d had the Misfit fitness tracker before we got our Purple mattress so I could compare my sleep before and after. We’re always on a quest for the best night of sleep. Even with a long night you’re not always getting as much deep sleep as you need and you can wake up feeling exhausted even after 7 or 8 hours. Most of my sleep is spent in the deeper section – honestly it seems harder to get as much deep sleep as I get older. I’m investing more than ever into apps, trackers, mattress, sheets, lighting and all that goes into setting the perfect environment for sleep.
Here’s a recent readout from the sleep tracker:
out of 5
If you need a mattress, I highly recommend you buy a Purple mattress. You’ll sleep like a king or queen!
That wraps up my Purple mattress review! After reading it, do you like Purple? Would you buy one? Do you already have one, and if so, what do you think? Please let me know in the comments.
